about

Having signed to AnalogueTrash and released his debut track Sleep at the end of 2020, Manchester-based Murderers provides the second single from the eagerly awaited Tape One EP. Save Yourself is released on 26th of March, 2021.

Murderers is Luke Thompson and vice-versa, a solo synthwave / post-punk / alternative project; originally a vehicle for laying down reference tracks for live shows in 2020 (we all know how that year turned out) that then morphed into the creation of a wider selection of works during the first lockdown.

Retaining the creative drive of live performances, Murderers delivers a raw sound; but to call it lo-fi is a disservice as the many diverse influences combine to produce something much more than just its constituent parts. As Save Yourself unfolds there is much here that will feel familiar to fans of melancholy such as The National and John Maus but underpinned with new romantic and post-punk influences.

Talking about the track Luke says “I've always loved songs that sound uplifting but on further listens reveal themselves to be about something darker. Save Yourself is about delusion, and the lie of total self-reliance which can encourage it. The Miami Vice era of 80s excess and superficiality provides both an apt aesthetic and a cultural mirror for the underlying brokenness the lyrics hide.”

Save Yourself takes that 80s aesthetic and creates a track that on first listen wouldn’t feel out of place on a John Hughes brat pack era film soundtrack, but this being Murderers, its depth delivers a bloody nose to notions of magic and surrealism from that era.
